  17. <p>     The Bush Administration and many economists contend that the
  18. long economic downturn is coming to an end, but with a recovery
  19. like this, who needs a recession? Statistics released last week
  20. indicate that if a turnaround has begun, it has done so with
  21. remarkable subtlety:
  22. </p>
  23. <p>-- The government's revised estimate of economic output
  24. during the second quarter showed a 0.5% drop, the third
  25. consecutive decline.
  26. </p>
  27. <p>-- Sales of existing single-family homes fell 2.1% in
  28. August compared with July.
  29. </p>
  30. <p>-- Consumer confidence was down for the third month in a
  31. row, according to the Conference Board, a research group.
  32. </p>
  33. <p>-- The number of workers applying for initial unemployment
  34. benefits rose to 439,000 for the week ending Sept. 14, up from
  35. 403,000 the previous week.
  36. </p>
  37. <p>-- Monthly orders for durable goods fell 3.8% in August.
  38. </p>
  39. <p>     Conclusion: America still considers this a recovery that
  40. only a President could love.
